10. Issho-Ni, Shoreditch
Issho-Ni means “with” and obviously this is the place to come with a bunch of friends. Sit down for an izakaya, Japanese plates to share accompanied by cocktails prepared by the bartender. These can include seared butterflyfish with truffle ponzu dressing or soft-shell crab maki rolls. On the weekends, a bottomless brunch offers great value with all-you-can-eat sashimi and maki rolls followed by entrees such as wagyu steak and chicken katsu curry. While many sushi restaurants can be minimal or even sterile, the vibe here is warm with hanging incandescent bulbs, leather bar stools and copper pendant lights, ensuring that Issho-Ni is Japanese by way of Shoreditch.

11. Eat Tokyo, various locations
After 40 years of gaming, Eat Tokyo is now an institution. It’s a Japanese company, and there are six branches in Tokyo – as well as eight in London – serving a vibrant trade in authentic sushi, sashimi, bento boxes, nigiri, chirashi and unagi. No-frills decor keeps prices low; eating is a quick affair rather than lingering. A great option for takeaway sushi also via Deliveroo.
