Step into Tokyo’s unique restaurants and bars with this new book series

Imagine you could sit down with the owner of your favorite Tokyo restaurant or bar and ask him anything: how did they get started, where did they learn to make their dashi? A new book series called Take Away Tokyo aims for the same level of intimacy with bilingual Japanese-English titles on some of Tokyo’s best venues.

Take Away Tokyo just launched with Sangenjaya craft beer book and bottle shop Pigalle. Each book in the series is dedicated to a place, and in a unique version, the owners or chefs themselves are the authors of each book. More than just interviews or cookbooks, they are personal stories written by the people behind the scene.

Books aren’t just about sharing funny anecdotes, but supporting an industry devastated by the coronavirus pandemic – most of the revenue from book sales goes to places. The series is crowdfunded and published by an independent publisher A kind, which was founded in Australia in April 2020.

“There are a lot of restaurants suffering from the coronavirus disaster, and Pigalle was no exception. The Somekind project was an opportunity for us to rethink our restaurant, and the writing process was a very creative time for us, ”says Chie Yamada, owner of Pigalle.

The concept of Pigalle’s book, “Welcome to Small World”, is a journey through the history of this quirky bar and the history of two of its iconic features: the refrigerator stocked with craft beer and the toilet stall that serves also gallery and event. space out. The books (2,200 each) are available for pre-order online and will be delivered after a production process of up to 12 weeks.
