DETROIT (AP) – Nissan is recalling more than 854,000 cars in the United States and Canada because the brake lights may not come on when the driver presses the pedal.

Nissan says silicon contamination of grease used in nearby components can cause oxidation that can cause the brake light switch to malfunction near the brake pedal. If this happens, the brake lights may not come on and the engine may not start. Owners can see a malfunction indicator on the dashboard if the condition occurs.

Nissan says it is not aware of any accidents or injuries caused by the problem.

Homeowners will receive an interim repair letter in April directing them to make an appointment for service if they encounter the problem. When enough parts are available in the fall, a second letter will be sent telling all owners to make service appointments. Dealers will replace the switch and add a protective eyelet.
