Animal welfare and food safety organizations around the world are encouraging the switch to cage-free eggs, which are more humane for animals and safer for consumers.
In caged egg farms, each laying hen is locked up for most of her life in a cage so small that she can barely turn around. Research by the European Food Safety Authority and others has found cage-free egg farms are up to 25 times less likely to be contaminated with key strains of Salmonella than cage-raised hens .
Battery cage egg production has been banned throughout the European Union as well as Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Canada, India and parts of the United States.
“HHW makes a point of sourcing our supplies from sustainable and responsible sources that follow ethical standards of sourcing and production. In keeping with this policy, we have the full support of our CEO, Dato’ Edwin Tan, so that we are making progress on our commitment to only use cage-free eggs,” said Purchasing Manager, En. Mohd. Farid bin Salim.
In recent years, a growing list of hospitality, retail, foodservice and packaged food brands have pledged to use only cage-free eggs across Asia. HHW is one of the first Malaysia-based hotel chains to fully transition to cage-free egg sourcing.
