2028: Solid-state batteries in Nissan vehicles

As of this writing, solid-state laminated battery cell technology represents the future for powering this entire wave of upcoming electric vehicles. As we know, the automotive industry is currently seeking to accelerate its integration of electric technology into its current fleet, but especially for future generations of models.

Players who manage to master this new form of batteries will have an advantage over their closest pursuers. Nissan unveiled its prototype solid-state laminated battery cell production facility a few days ago.

The marketing of a vehicle equipped with such a battery is scheduled for 2028, with the establishment of a pilot production line in its Yokohama plant by 2024, to test the technology.

Nissan estimates this all-solid-state battery technology could cost $75 per kWh by 2028 and even drop to $65 per kWh thereafter. With this price structure for batteries, the only source of energy for electric vehicles, the Japanese manufacturer believes that the price of electric vehicles could be the equivalent of gasoline vehicles.

Remember that all-solid-state batteries have about twice the density of lithium-ion batteries like those used in most electrified vehicles today. In addition, the recharge time of these batteries would be shorter, a crucial detail in the current race for electrification.

“The knowledge gained from our experience supports the development of all-solid-state batteries and we have accumulated important elemental technologies. Going forward, our R&D and manufacturing divisions will continue to work together to utilize this facility of prototype production and accelerate the practical application of all-solid-state batteries,” said Kunio Nakaguro, executive vice president of research and development at Nissan.

Nissan hopes to integrate such batteries into more vehicles, including pickup trucks, in the future. If it manages to get ahead of the competition (by 2028), Nissan could make up for lost time in a few years, the delays surrounding the arrival of the Ariya crossover and the increasingly fierce competition in the electric niche hurting the creator of the Leaf.
